The Garden

Aulestad has beautiful garden with a courtyard.

The gardens

The garden is influenced by Karoline and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson’s impulses during their many travels in Europe.

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson made clear his interest in gardening prior to arriving at Aulestad. It should look nice around the houses!

“You need to talk to Norstrøm the gardener in Hamar regarding a garden. He must start quickly, if possible, but he must have an absolutely free hand. Large beautiful garden!”  This extract from Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson’s letter to Carl Seip in 1874 confirms the poet’s interest in gardens.

Historical - contemporary

There is a beautiful historical garden at Aulestad today, but it is not contemporary with the time when Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson lived there. The different details have arrived during the years that have passed since Bjørnson arrived at the farm in 1875.

Most of the garden has been created after Bjørnson’s death in 1910. This garden shows more the time that has passed than the time that was.

In this interplay between the surroundings, the buildings and the history of the farm, the garden is made into a document of time showing  life at Aulestad as a home and a museum.
